Richard had a very difficult time keeping a job. In truth, due to his inactivity and lack of drive, he was unemployed far more regularly than he was in work. And when he did get a job, he had a very difficult time getting to work on time, he frequently received less than acceptable performance assessments, and he called off sick so frequently that he regularly got fired three or four weeks after he started working.

It goes without saying that one of the effects of Richard's terrible employment track record was the fact that he was almost totally broke much of the time. Regardless of Richard's appalling work history and financial mismanagement, nevertheless, one way or another he made it a point to drink in an irresponsible and hazardous manner much of the time.

So it came as no big jolt when Richard got arrested for a second DUI. When he went before the court, the magistrate stated to Richard that his alcohol-related conduct was irresponsible and, as a result, he was going to sentence Richard to spend eight months in jail.

During his time behind bars, Richard was expected to learn more about alcohol abuse facts such as alcohol related consequence and alcohol deaths, about the demoralizing effects of abusive drinking, and he was expected to get alcohol rehab. The judge highlighted the fact that unless Richard gets quality alcohol treatment and learns how to live an alcohol-free life, he will most probably be spending a lot more time in the local jail.

Richard articulated that he understood what the judge was saying but he still asserted that incarceration was not the most realistic decision. The judge saw things in an entirely different way and stated that it was his responsibility to keep individuals off the streets who drive and drink and who get one or more DUIs. To give credibility to this perspective, the magistrate quoted some long-standing, comprehensively researched alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics that stressed some of the adverse effects that are correlated with abusive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.

Although Richard understood that he drank irresponsibly, he never thought that he was an alcoholic. So it was quite a surprise when Richard began experiencing chronic alcoholism symptoms and signs and alcohol withdrawals around seven-and-a-half after getting locked up in the municipal jail.

To manage his alcohol withdrawals in a safe manner, Richard was life flighted to a rehabilitation facility for alcohol detoxification and then brought back to jail. While locked up in the county jail Richard was given alcohol treatment but because he received this rehabilitation as something that was imposed upon him, he was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his excessive drinking.

When his time in jail was finished, the magistrate announced to Richard that he would be under strict observation and would be mandated to take periodic urine alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his drinking circumstances and how he reluctantly followed the rehabilitation modus operandi while in jail, the judge knew that it was simply a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.

As the judge thought about Richard's circumstance, he couldn't help but think about how some people never use their intellect and discover how to live in an adult manner.
