A Young Couple Assesses Their Excessive And Abusive Drinking And Their Short And Long Range Dreams, Hopes, And Plans

Frank and Linda have been seeing one another for eight-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same Russian history class at a relatively small, countryside, liberal arts college located in the Northern part of the United States. While they were just good buddies at first, they finally started dating when they were in their first year of college.

Given the fact that both of them came from very conventional backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the casual drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time proceeded, nonetheless, they started to go to more keg parties, sorority and fraternity parties, football bashes, and happy hours. As a result, they little by little began to drink increasingly more the more they saw one another.

After they graduated from college, they both landed jobs in a relatively small city that was located roughly seventy-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move into the same apartment with one another.

With any substantial modification in an individual's life there is usually something that initiates the specific modification in question. For Frank and Linda the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "method of change." To come to the point, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda started to critically appraise their abusive and irresponsible drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their lives. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their irresponsible drinking.

Would their heavy and irresponsible drinking adversely affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending most of their money on drinking if they were to begin saving for a new house?

From a different viewpoint, even though neither one of them ever experienced alcohol poisoning, received a "drunk driving" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they understood that their abusive and heavy drinking was becoming a problem that they could not "sweep under the carpet" any longer. All of these queries plainly led to the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to identify more completely with the fact that they couldn't maintain their abusive and heavy drinking if their dreams, goals, and aspirations were to be attained.

Once they settled upon this conclusion, they notified their drinking pals about their their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to hang around with them but that they would be drinking responsibly from this moment forward so that they could start realizing their future plans, dreams, and hopes.

Much to their amazement, all of their pals expressed relief because they too had been deliberating on their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often focused on drinking. They also realized that they would have to change notably if they were to become more adult-like and show more forethought for their plans, their health, and for their careers in the next ten or fifteen years.

After their heart-to-heart chat with their pals about their dreams, hopes, and plans, Frank and Linda in essence started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The primary reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same frame of mind regarding their excessive and hazardous drinking and their relatively short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.
